Character Biography (Source: Wikipedia)

In 1999, Joy was pregnant and single. She didn't remember much about the father except that he drove a Ford (and therefore named her baby Dodge). In the episode, 2×18 Guess Who's Coming Out of Joy it turns out she met Dodge's father at a Dio concert. She met Earl Hickey at the Crabshack, and seeing him as a good potential husband, she and her friends got him drunk, and drove him to Las Vegas where they married before Earl sobered up. Earl had a girlfriend named Jesse at the time and after she discovered them, a confrontation ended with Joy knocking out Jesse's front teeth.

At some point, Joy began having an affair with Darnell Turner, who worked at the Crabshack, and eventually became pregnant with his child. Although Earl was obviously not the father, the baby was named Earl Jr. Earl even lied to Joy's parents insisting the child was his ( You know how sometimes two black people make an albino baby? is Earl's simple line of explanation. )

In 2005, when Earl was recovering in the hospital from being hit by a car, Joy divorced him and had Darnell move in with her.

Several early episodes showed Joy as a menace to Earl and his quest to gain good karma by completing his list (which she calls „Earl's stupid idiot list“) since she believed she was entitled to half his lottery money and was always trying to get it. She even went so far as to attempt to kill Earl with a crossbow, then a handgun after finding a video will Earl made when they were still married in which he left everything he had to her. She only stopped this when he told her he'd changed the will.

She still would find ways to torment Earl at first, however, such as painting „U R an ASS“ (sic) on his car, and planning her wedding to Darnell on Earl's birthday and inviting everyone but Earl. Earl (after several beers) decided he didn't want to keep bickering with his ex-wife, saying he wanted to be „the Bruce to her Demi“. Unfortunately during his drunken attempt to extend an olive branch at her wedding, he accidentally kicked a soccer ball at her face.

At first, she wasn't interested in Earl's attempts to plan a new wedding, but soon became involved. Unfortunately, working closely led to Earl and Joy sleeping together days before the wedding, which was nearly derailed when Darnell found out, though Earl managed to set things right.

Joy has been portrayed as quite tough, is the first woman in her family to reach her 30's with all her original teeth, and Earl described her as ‚a bad example‘ when talking to a young boy about women. She also was able to beat a fully trained bounty hunter (Earl's ex-girlfriend Jesse) into submission and knock her two front teeth out (big shiny gold ones) again. she learned to fight very well after „watching a lot of Springer“. She frequently uses the expression „Oh, snap!“

Recently, her image on the show has softened considerably. She still steals shamelessly as Earl used to, makes fun of Earl's list, and often bickers with Earl's friend Catalina Aruca but she's been shown to genuinely love Darnell and her kids. One particular incident is when an obnoxious couple moves next door in their trailer park, and tosses their trash into the open windows of their home. Joy does nothing since she's taking medication to prevent her rage from acting up. But when an empty beer can hits one of her sons on the head Joy immediately snaps out of it and frightens off her neighbors by politely warning them that when her medication wears off she'll be back to visit them. This, of course, is after she explains why she is on the court-ordered drug and her past history of inflicting pain on others. This inspires the neighbors to immediately move, sensing that Joy may not be the person to anger. She fully appreciates the people around her, even Earl, (though she often hides it behind a front of self-centeredness and calling people „dummy“). She also confessed to Earl that their drunken marriage was arranged by Joy and her friends, rather than an accident.

More recently, Joy's stealing finally caught up with her after she stole a truck full of merchandise (and, as she later found out, a store employee) after they refused to give her a refund on a TV entertainment center she returned. After she was caught, Joy faced a serious prison sentence because this was her third strike. She managed to find a lawyer to take her case (though the lawyer nearly didn't after Joy made fun of her speech due to being deaf).

Joy, after learning pregnant women are more sympathetic to a jury, attempted to come on to both Darnell and Earl (and Randy), though all refused. During this time she learned she and her former childhood rival Liberty were half-sisters (Liberty was the product of one of Joy's father's many affairs with several African-American women over the years). She later agreed to be a surrogate mother so Liberty and her husband could have a child without interrupting Liberty's promising wrestling career (the story was written to accommodate Jaime Pressley's real-life pregnancy).

Joy was acquited of all charges after Earl confessed to her crimes.

Joy operates a nail parlor in her home as a legitimate source of income but she still steals often.

Joy drives a Subaru Brat. In the pilot episode, it was black in color. When it was seen again in 1×03 Randy's Touchdown, it was seen with an American flag paint job. In the Earl Misadventure: Bad Karma Episode included with the Season 1 DVD, it is seen with the American flag paint job.

Personal life

Pressly was born in Kinston, North Carolina to James Liston Pressly and Brenda Sue Smith. She has a sister, Jessie Pressly and a brother, Jim Pressly. Pressly spent 11 years studying gymnastics and dancing.

By the time she was 14, she was already the spokeswoman for her modeling agency, „International Cover Model Search“, and she had begun to gain recognition for her modeling in the USA, as well as in Italy and Japan. Pressly attended Costa Mesa High School in California, where her mother had moved while her parents were going through the process of a divorce. Jaime subsequently sought and succeeded to have herself legally emancipated from her parents at the age of 15.

One persistent rumor is that Pressly married a man named Brodie Mitchell in 1998. Pressly, who has never married, has stated she has heard of Mitchell but does not know him.[1] Mitchell apparently has made enough claims about being married to Pressly that some sources have reported it as fact.

Pressly dated her Jack and Jill co-star Simon Rex in 2000 and 2001. In a December, 2001 interview with Howard Stern (the same notorious interview in which she said that he looked liked he got „slapped [with] a yarmulke“), she claimed that Rex „dumped me on my birthday.“ She was later linked to Carson Daly.[citation needed]

In October 2006, she became engaged to her boyfriend of a year and a half, DJ Eric Calvo (aka DJ Eric Cubiche), whom she had previously been friends with for 9 years.[2] Jamie gave birth on May 11, 2007 at 7:31am in Cedars-Sinai Medical Center to their first child, Dezi James Calvo. Dezi weighed 6 lbs, 4 oz, and was 18 1/2 inches long. In a February 2007 interview on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Pressly said she wants the child to be bilingual (English/Spanish) to reflect Calvo's Cuban heritage. The child is treated to music from Pressly's iPod, played through earphones held to her tummy.

Pressly said in a 2006 interview with Esquire magazine that she almost purchased a ticket for a flight on one of the planes that crashed into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, but decided not to take the flight because she felt it left too early in the morning. She said she doesn't like to talk about it.

Pressly starred as „Violet“ in the 1997 film Poison Ivy: The New Seduction. In 1998 she played a recurring role as the assassin Mika in the TV action series Mortal Kombat: Conquest. In 1999, Pressly was cast as the promiscuous dancer „Audrey“ on the television show Jack & Jill.

Pressly starred in the independent film Poor White Trash, playing scheming gold-digger Sandy Lake. She subsequently appeared in a number of widely released films, including Not Another Teen Movie (playing Priscilla, a stereotypical high school cheerleader) and Torque, as a crazed motorcycle-riding criminal.

In 2001 she was made the new spokesmodel for Liz Claiborne Cosmetics and its fragrance Lucky You. Pressly has posed nude for the March 1998 and February 2004 issues of Playboy. She has performed with the band The Pussycat Dolls. In 2002, she was ranked #8 in Stuff magazine's „102 Sexiest Women in the World“. In 2003, she launched a lingerie line, J'Aime, which has now become a full sleepwear and ready-to-wear line. In 2006, Maxim magazine named her #34 on its annual[3] list; she is also featured in their[4] gallery. She also appeared nude in the May 2006 issue of Allure.[5]

She also appeared in a number of music videos, including Girls of Summer by Aerosmith and a cover of Tainted Love by Marilyn Manson.

In 2006, Pressly was an honorary captain for Minor League Baseball's Carolina League in the California League/Carolina League All-star game in Rancho Cucamonga, California. Her hometown team, the Kinston Indians, is a member of the Carolina League.

On May 31, 2006 she hosted the first annual VH1 Rock Honors.

Pressly currently appears on the hit NBC sitcom My Name Is Earl as Joy. In July 2006, she received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on the show. Lately, Pressly plays the role of Tina Armstrong, in the movie based on the popular video game, DOA: Dead or Alive.

She hosted the October 7, 2006 episode of Saturday Night Live with musical guest Corinne Bailey Rae. Prior to this, she guest starred on an episode of MADtv from season eleven, where she played Hillary Clinton in a parody of the NBC sitcom, „My Name Is Earl“ called „My Name Is Dubya“, where George W. Bush (Frank Caliendo) makes a list of all the bad things he's done in the past and rectifies them one by one (one of which was to lie to Hillary Clinton about his political beliefs so he can have sex with her). She also guest starred in an episode of the WB series Charmed, playing Milley, a mermaid trying to find love.
